Does Psychotherapy play an important role in Schizophrenia?

The most severe type of mental illness, schizophrenia has long been regarded as the standard psychotic disorder. It is a problem that affects about 1 in 100 persons worldwide. Since the first antipsychotic medications were created in the 1950s, there has been a progressive transition away from psychotherapy and toward biological approaches to treatment.

But over the past two decades, there has been a resurgence in interest in psychotherapeutic treatments for schizophrenia, and psychotherapy still plays a significant role in the management of the illness.

There are numerous types of psychotherapy, including cognitive rehabilitation techniques like cognitive improvement treatment and psychodynamic therapy. Few people with schizophrenia are given the option of psychotherapy, but for some, it can mean the difference between a bad and a good prognosis.

  1. We definitely need better treatment options! In providing therapy to a young adult with schizophrenia, it was very hard to make progress because of non-compliance to her meds. Eventually after she got to know me, I was able to teach her to not be afraid of the voices. Building rapport with her and the family led to acceptance, but limits with doctors created more problems. Thank you for your blog:)
